Opened in 1985, the Ortega Design Studio is tucked away in the tree-shaded gardens of an 1875 era farm house. The design office is located on 1466 Railroad Avenue, in St. Helena, California, in the heart of the Napa Valley. With over 20 years experience, the design team, Joann and Susann Ortega, who moved to the Napa Vallery in the 70s, focuses their artistic talents on the wine industry packaging of wine. Their goal is to create original and effective label designs that reflect the wine’s personal style as well as the aesthetics of the individual winery. They have created wine packaging for this region’s most well known wineries as well as designing wine labels for producers in New York, Switzerland and France. The Ortegas know the wine label is the focal point in promoting and selling the product. The first visual impression is sometimes all that consumers have to decide on a wine to buy, therefore, the individuality of a wine should be telegraphed to the consumer through its label. The Ortegas integrate product information, brand character, marketing input and their two unique design approaches to produce distinctive wine label packages. The fact that they are twins adds another dimension to their concepts, bringing complementary, yet different ideas to the designs produced. Designer / client relationships require communication throughout the design process, effective design solutions, and a conscientious regard for the schedule of production for the product. The results of Ortega Design are seen in America’s finest restaurants and retail establishments. Joann and Susann Ortega studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Joann received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Art Center and attended the Otis Art Institute while working for a graphic design studio in Los Angeles. Susann was a member of the faculty teaching art at the University of Nebraska where she had earned a Masters of Fine Art. They both moved to the Napa Valley in the 70”s and worked for a graphic studio before opening their Studio, Ortega Design, in St. Helena. They are also Fine Art Painters and Printmakers Clam and Lily, garden geese. Joann and Susann Ortega                                                    Photo: Terence Ford
